Super-Charged Toshiba Battery
Toshiba has been working hard to get past some of the problems inherent in Lithium-Ion batteries. They have developed a stable battery called the SCiB that can handle a fast charge (at 50A) and be at 90% capacity in 5 minutes.
With a high heat resistant separator the chances of thermal runaway are diminished. Even as they simulate an external short-circuit by crushing the battery, the battery temperature never rose above 212°F. This should help alleviate some of our worries as this technology finds its way into our laptops and hybrid or electric cars.
Toshiba touts that this battery can be recharged over 5000 times and can even work in colder temperatures allowing a lot more flexibility. If the battery holds up as well as Toshiba says, it could mean quite a change in how we charge our laptops and soon electric vehicles.
How afraid are you of your batteries? With all the news about battery fires running around, are you afraid of your laptop?
