Tips to Start a Cold Car Battery
Remember the old Sear’s Diehard battery TV ad where they took a car and drove it into the woods in the winter and left it there for many months? And then they came back at the end of winter but, when it was still very cold, turned on the lights waited a short time and then not only started that car but jump started several others.
Yeah, I remember that, but only very vaguely as I was only a small child at the time. hahahaha
The explanation is quite simple my intellectual buddy crowed. When Sears drove the car into the woods the battery was fully charged and the cold weather keep it fully charged. At 38 degrees F or colder it will stay fully charged almost indefinitely.
But, I interrupted, when I try to start my car on a cold morning, even after being left outside only one night, it will barely turn the engine over. What’s up with that I asked?
He responded that, just like the alkaline batteries, which have been refrigerated for storage, need to be warmed up before use, the car battery likewise needs to be warmed up, no need for charging. By turning on the headlights for several minutes, before trying to start the car, the chemical process of supplying electricity to run the lights generates internal heat and viola the battery is warmed up. So keeping the continuously in a cold area the shelf life was extended all winter.
Wow, I was totally amazed!!!
Robin’s parting remark was “This is something that even you can safely try at home”.
