Cheaper Solar Power
Those of us that look into converting our homes over to solar as either a tie-in system or an off the grid system knows that these panels aren’t exactly the cheapest things. There is a group of young scientists lead by Dr. Kevin Dahm at the College of Engineering at Rowan University in New Jersey that has decided to tackle this problem. They are working with a local inventor to make a commercially feasible solar thermal system to generate electricity and warm your home. According to the students working on the problem this is the first unique solar system in over 30 years. Typical photovoltaic systems that generate 10-12kW of energy can cost as much as $80,000. They are saying that the new system should be able to produce the same amount of electricity for only 5-10% of that cost! I don’t know about you, but turning my house over to solar for around 8 grand sure appeals to me. Time will tell if they can pull it off and make a marketable system. If they do however I can see the amount of solar installations rising by leaps and bounds. Would you install a solar system for $8000?
