Striving Towards a Solar Revolution

Solar RevolutionIn order to bring the costs of solar generated power down, the Department of Energy has decided to invest up to $13.7 million over 3 years for various university projects. The goal is to work on bringing the cost of the energy generated from photovoltaic technologies down. Current price levels are between $0.18 and $0.23 per kWh. The Department of Energy wants to get us to reach somewhere between a nickel and dime per kWh by 2015. According to the CEO of GT Solar, Tom Zarrella “If you look at the entire manufacturing chain from silicon to modules, there is a 20% yield loss”. Anyone that knows anything about business knows that a 20% loss in yield is simply unacceptable. If they can fix this hopefully the prices of solar cells will become more reasonable and we will see more people and companies start generating at least part of their own power needs, reducing more and more our dependency on fossil fuels. Do you see a solar revolution if the prices come down? Are you considering turning your home onto solar?
